Resource overview

Survival NPC - Maria "Mimi" Estrada is a high-quality AAA hero character structured through a digital human pipeline. The package centers on a fully rigged female character equipped with a loadout of combat accessories and a set of 59 mocap mobility start animations. The resource is designed to drop directly into survival, post-apocalyptic, or combat-oriented projects, complete with example maps for previewing skeletal meshes, animations, and cinematic character setups.

Digital Human Pipeline and AAA Hero Character Construction

The character is constructed using a digital human pipeline that incorporates high-quality refractive eyes and detail-mapped skin. The skin material uses layered subsurface scattering combined with roughness variations to achieve realistic surface response across different lighting conditions.

Texture resolution reaches 8k, capturing fine detail across the body and face. Hair is rendered with high detail, including custom textures for directional, root, and depth properties. These hair textures allow the material to respond to lighting and camera angle with directional behavior rather than relying on flat color maps. The pipeline treats the character as a cinematic-grade asset suitable for close-up hero shots and real-time cutscenes.

A digitally drawn 2D concept image is included for in-game use, applicable to dialogue boxes, thumbnails, and other interface contexts. 2D source files for the concept image are available on request with receipt verification.

Loadout Accessories and Modular Civilian Variations

Maria ships with a full set of accessories, covering several categories of gear. The included items are:

  • Cap
  • Glasses
  • Necklace
  • Arm Wraps
  • Glove
  • Pistol
  • Holster
  • Ammopouch
  • Shoes

Static and skeletal mesh accessories include a basic handgun and a canteen. The character also includes optimized combined versions alongside modular variations. Every military and combat item can be stripped away from the model to present a more civilian appearance.

This modular approach allows a production team to use the same base character for multiple scene types. A survivor armed for a firefight and the same survivor in a non-combat context can be configured from the same asset without needing to build separate character models.

Blendshapes and Facial Expression Control

The character includes 52 blendshapes. These morph targets are set up for iPhone AR control, a feature highlighted on the asset roadmap. Morph-pose-related features are currently disabled and will be activated in update 01. The remainder of the character package is game-ready and functional outside of this specific system.

A blueprint called BP_Morphpose_MasterClass Acts as a morph-pose controller. It has custom functions configured for blinking, brow movement, and mouth movement. Characters built with the same morph poses can plug into this blueprint directly. The controller is positioned as a starting point for creating more complex facial animations and expressions.

Two additional interface and map elements support the blendshape system.

  • BP_CharacterSample — A user interface widget providing the controller for the cinematic blendshape demo map.
  • Cinematic Blendshape Demo Map — Allows preview of preset morph-pose animations and real-time customization of facial expressions. A basic version is included without the morph-pose controller, while the full version arrives in the first update.

Most promotional screenshots for the character were taken inside the Blendshape Demo Map, meaning the cinematic character setup seen in promotional material is what the package provides without additional configuration.

Mocap Mobility Start Animations

The package includes 59 mocap mobility start animations, consisting of 31 unique takes. These animations cover the start portions of mobility sequences. Poses visible in driving screenshots are not included in the animation set.

An animation preview map showcases all included animations, allowing developers to review each take in context before integrating them into gameplay or cinematic sequences.

Example Maps and Preview Environments

Several maps are included to preview and integrate the character into different scenarios.

  • Custom Third Person Map — Built from the third-person example with cinematic post-processing and lighting applied.
  • Overview Map — Contains all unique skeletal meshes included in the pack for quick reference.
  • Animation Preview Map — Showcases the animation set included with the character.

The third-person demo map received an update improving lighting and environment. Overview maps were added for each character associated with the asset family, allowing quick preview of content without loading separate packages.

Changelog Progression and Skeleton Updates

The asset moved through several versions. The initial release was version 1.0. Version 1.02, dated 12/01/2022, introduced a skeleton update to prevent bone conflicts and a skin update for Maria to improve animation quality.

Version 1.03, dated 16/01/2022, expanded the content scope. The update added overview maps for each character, additional civilian outfit presets for Hank and Mike, and a description for the Morph Pose interface to better explain its function. It also resolved a skin clipping issue on Maria and corrected file names and directories. Tessellation was disabled by default to resolve performance issues reported by users.

For anyone currently using earlier versions, a full reinstall is recommended to ensure directory structures and file names align with the corrected layout.

Roadmap Features

The asset is positioned for future updates. The current roadmap outlines several planned additions.

  • 52 Blendshapes and morph poses configured for iPhone AR control
  • Dirt and gore grunge masks for weathered or damaged appearances
  • New levels and blueprints

Until update 01 arrives, morph-pose features remain disabled. The character, accessories, animations, and example maps are usable immediately for game-ready production.

Related Survival Character Line

Survival NPC - Maria "Mimi" Estrada exists alongside a line of related survival characters. These include Hank Murphy, Mike, a Mike and Hank Twin-Pack, and a Realistic Decomposition asset. The overview maps added in version 1.03 cover each character in this lineup, providing a unified preview method across the entire set.

Practical Workflow Fit

This package fits into production workflows that need a cinematic hero character for survival or post-apocalyptic environments. The digital human skin pipeline, 8k textures, and detailed hair system make it suitable for close-up cinematic shots. The 59 mocap mobility animations provide immediate movement options. The modular loadout and combined character versions allow quick transitions between combat-ready and civilian configurations.

The included example maps give developers immediate reference environments for assessing the character under cinematic post-processing and gameplay-oriented lighting. With the morph-pose controller blueprint and blendshape demo infrastructure prepared for the first update, the asset is set up to handle further facial animation work once the AR-ready morph-pose system activates.
