Resource overview

BigBlob delivers a fully physical, soft-body creature configured for third-person or first-person control in Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5. Built as a flexible monster, minion, or parasitic entity, the package combines a dedicated skeletal mesh, specialized physics asset configurations, interactive Blueprints, and liquid-like material networks designed to simulate amorphous movement.

Physical Skeletal Mesh and Soft Body Presets

At the center of the asset is a physics-driven skeletal mesh engineered to behave like an unstable fluid mass. Rather than relying purely on pre-baked bone transforms, the character utilizes real-time physics to deform, flatten, and wobble in response to collisions and movement forces.

To support different consistencies, the package includes five distinct physical asset presets. These presets shift the simulation profile between dense, semi-solid jelly and free-flowing liquid states. The v1.5 revision expanded these options with a thinner variant of the physical assets, allowing developers to alter how heavily the slime sags or responds to high-velocity impacts.

Because simulation engines handle soft-body dynamics differently across engine generations, the asset is structured around specific version requirements: Unreal Engine 4.26, 5.0, and 5.2. Unreal Engine 4 relies on the legacy PhysX system, whereas Unreal Engine 5 executes physics via Chaos Physics. The dedicated 5.2 build accounts for updates made to the Chaos engine, ensuring that inertia, damping, and collision response remain stable without tearing or unwanted mesh stretching.

Controlling BigBlob: Blueprints, Parasite Mechanics, and Slime Vision

Interactive behavior is driven by modified Blueprints covering both the player character and interactive prey targets. The player setup allows direct control over the slime's mechanical state during runtime. Operators can actively toggle the creature between a relaxed and a stiffened physical state, altering how external forces impact the body while sliding across surfaces or falling from ledges.

The package integrates dedicated parasitic mechanics. Using targeting and attack functions built directly into the actor logic, BigBlob can leap onto prey characters, attach, and seize control over them. In this state, the slime functions as a host controller, subverting the prey's movement. This system establishes a complete possession loop without requiring custom interaction scripting from scratch, offering out-of-the-box compatibility with prey actors such as humanoid drones like Cyber Cubes: Mimic v2.0.

For direct perspective shifts, the character Blueprint supports an FPS mode equipped with custom slime vision. This mode moves the camera inside the creature's translucent mass, filtering the scene through the organism's fluid interior. Controls for these mechanics—including material color swaps, target acquisition, possession triggers, animation selection, and animation playback speed adjustments—are mapped to demonstration controls mounted directly on the side walls of the included demo levels.

Liquid Shading, Surface Creases, and Morph Targets

The visual representation of BigBlob relies on an advanced liquid material network designed to convey thickness, light interaction, and volumetric depth. This master material features extensive parameter controls, enabling real-time adjustments to coloration, specularity, and internal light dispersion.

The v1.5 release introduced updated surface crease details, generating sharp folds across the exterior membrane as the body compresses. Alongside the procedural shading tweaks, two dedicated morph targets allow the mesh to melt down, collapsing into a flatter puddle shape that blends with ground collisions.

Material rendering splits into two distinct operational paths depending on visual requirements:

  • Standard Slime Material: Made for broad performance efficiency, this default setup achieves a thick, liquid appearance without engaging opacity buffers or dynamic scene transparency.
  • Translucent (Water-Glass) Variation: Built to simulate crystalline or clear water-like fluid, this shader utilizes refractions. Achieving accurate refraction passes on this variant requires ray tracing to be enabled in project settings.

Animation Suite and Demo Collision Profiles

The package includes a comprehensive movement collection of 33 base animations, supplemented by an additional 18 ground-state animations introduced in update v1.5. These supplementary animations align BigBlob's movement cadence, idle twitches, and crawl cycles with related slimes in the Blob series.

Because soft-body skeletal meshes incur higher CPU simulation costs when colliding with each other simultaneously, the primary demonstration level disables collisions on the showcase animation gallery. Displaying all 33 animated assets at once within an active collision volume leads to substantial frame rate degradation. For testing direct body-on-body physics, developers can open the dedicated Collision Enabled Animation Preview Level, which isolates slime-to-slime interactions under active collision conditions.

Project Deployment and Implementation Roles

BigBlob fits diverse roles across horror, science fiction, and fantasy titles. The asset functions effectively as:

  • A playable extraterrestrial entity utilizing first-person fluid mechanics and predatory possession loops.
  • An ambient dungeon monster or minion programmed to swarm, stiffen on impact, and overwhelm player characters.
  • A parasitic hazard in robotic or sci-fi environments, infiltrating mechanized targets and altering host behavior.

With separate builds for PhysX in UE4 and Chaos in UE5, comprehensive possession Blueprints, and dedicated physical presets, the package provides a complete framework for physical fluid-based character movement without requiring custom soft-body integration.
