Replicating Urban Architecture and Atmosphere

The Modern City Pack is designed around the specific architectural spirit of New York City, utilizing real-world prototypes for almost every building included in the set. The developer focused on high-density urban details to ground the environment in a recognizable reality. The collection features 36 unique buildings, providing enough variety to construct complex streetscapes without immediate repetition. These structures are accompanied by a wide array of decals, such as graffiti, signs, and posters, which are implemented as flat meshes with transparent shaders to maintain visual fidelity without relying on complex external decal systems.

Implementation of Real-time Day and Night Cycles

To support dynamic environments, every building in the pack includes separate day and night versions. This setup allows for integration with real-time day and night cycles, as the materials and lighting states are pre-configured to switch based on the scene’s requirements. Performance at this scale is managed through Level of Detail (LOD) components, which are applied to all buildings and the majority of street props. Due to the high level of detail across the 1,332 included assets, the developer recommends targeting mid-to-high-end PC hardware for optimal implementation.

Street-Level Props and Physics Integration

The environment is built out using a variety of modular road parts and sidewalks, featuring different turns and intersections to allow for custom grid layouts. Street-level detail is supplemented by a large collection of props, including fences, fire hydrants, pay phones, newspaper boxes, and fuse boxes. For interactive elements, the trash cans are provided with a physics setup. These smaller assets also utilize LODs to ensure that the density of the street clutter does not disproportionately impact the frame rate during navigation.

Interiors and Specialized Asset Systems

Beyond the exterior shells, the pack includes two fully detailed interiors: a player’s apartment and a gun store. The apartment interior is further refined with individual prefabs for props and cloth curtains for windows. For developers needing weaponry, the pack contains guns constructed from individual parts, making them ready for animation. In later iterations of the pack, interior textures and materials for floors, bricks, walls, and wood were updated to higher-quality versions to support closer camera proximity.

Technical Specifications and Texture Management

The resource utilizes a tiered texture system to balance detail and memory usage. High-resolution texture atlases range from 1024×1024 to 2048×2048, with large 4096×4096 sheets used to cover groups of five to ten buildings simultaneously. Tileable textures for common surfaces like bricks, concrete, and metal are set at 512×512. All materials utilize bump and specular maps to enhance surface depth. The package is optimized for Unity 2017.4.1 and later, and it avoids the use of legacy .js files to comply with modern engine standards.
