The Megacity pack is a 3D modular location toolkit designed for the creation of expansive, low-poly urban environments. It contains 358 distinct assets that allow for the construction of unique cityscapes across various game genres. The modular nature of the package means that landscapes and buildings can be rearranged to suit specific level design requirements, rather than being restricted to a single fixed layout. To demonstrate the potential of these assets, a prepared demo scene is included, representing a complete location ready for immediate use or as a reference for building custom levels.

Because the assets are optimized for game engines, they are intended for a variety of workflows beyond standard gaming, including VR/AR applications, marketing materials, and architectural animations. The creator has designed these resources to be easily editable, allowing for customization of the low-poly aesthetic to fit the specific visual identity of a project.

Architectural Variety and City Infrastructure

The collection includes 76 specific building models that cover a wide range of civic, commercial, and residential functions. This variety ensures that different districts within a megacity can be visually distinguished. The architectural library includes skyscrapers for central business districts, along with specialized government buildings, a business center, and residential options ranging from standard housing to elite residential structures.

Public service and infrastructure models are represented by a diverse set of facilities, including:

  • Emergency and Health: Fire stations, hospitals, and police departments.
  • Education: Schools, colleges, and universities.
  • Transportation Hubs: Airports, railway stations, and tram depots.
  • Specialized Structures: A cosmodrome, churches, mosques, and synagogues.

For the commercial and social layers of the city, the pack provides smaller-scale modular shops and entertainment venues such as cinemas, casinos, bars, barbershops, burger shops, and coffee shops. Basic utility structures like gas stations are also included to flesh out the roadside environments.

The GPU-Driven Procedural Traffic System

A central feature of this package is the procedural traffic system, which is designed to simulate the movement of thousands of vehicles simultaneously while maintaining a high frame rate. This system utilizes Compute Shaders to offload the processing power required for vehicle behavior to the GPU. This approach is particularly effective for simulating the dense traffic flow expected in a large-scale megacity demo scene.

The system provides a mechanism for constructing road networks using a combination of Unity splines and modular road assets. Developers can customize the traffic behavior to meet specific scene requirements by adjusting several parameters:

  • Vehicle movement speed
  • The total number of cars active in the scene
  • The distance maintained between individual vehicles

This system is built to handle the complexities of large-scale urban simulation where traditional CPU-based pathfinding might struggle with performance overhead.

Technical Specifications and Platform Compatibility

The Megacity assets and the associated traffic system are compatible across multiple platforms, though there are specific hardware requirements for the traffic module due to its reliance on modern GPU features. The traffic system is supported on Windows and Windows Store using DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 with Shader Model 5.0. It also supports OpenGL 4.3 on Linux or Windows, Vulkan, and macOS or iOS via the Metal graphics API.

It is important to note that the procedural traffic system is not available for mobile Android devices or older phone hardware. This limitation is due to the lack of support for the necessary shader models and the lower GPU performance found on those devices. However, the 3D models themselves remain optimized for use across all platforms. The developer provides a tutorial specifically for the traffic system to assist in integrating the spline-based road mechanics into new projects.
