Urban City Package

Modular Road and Sidewalk Implementation

The Urban City Package is designed to support the construction of city layouts through a system of modular road and sidewalk components. By providing variations in these foundational pieces, the developer allows for the creation of non-repetitive street networks. These modules serve as the base layer for any urban scene, establishing the footprint for vehicular and pedestrian paths. The inclusion of sidewalk variations ensures that transitions between intersections and straightaways maintain visual interest across different sections of a project.

Structural Variety and Building Distribution

Architecture in this package is divided into two distinct categories to help developers manage scene depth and performance. There are 73 buildings in total, categorized as either main buildings or background buildings. The 61 main buildings are intended for the foreground and mid-ground areas where the camera is most likely to focus. These structures provide the primary silhouette of the city streets. To fill out the horizon and create a sense of scale without unnecessary overhead, the developer included 11 background buildings. These are specifically intended to populate the distance, giving the environment a dense, metropolitan appearance. It is important to note that these structures focus on exterior presence, as the package contains no interior visualization.

Populating the Scene with Street and Rooftop Props

A significant portion of the resource is dedicated to the smaller details that make an urban environment feel lived-in. With 196 prop models, the package covers a wide spectrum of functional and decorative elements. These props are grouped into several logical categories for placement:

  • Street Infrastructure: This includes street and traffic lights, traffic signals, and brick walls for defining boundaries at the ground level.
  • Signage and Communication: Signboards and billboards are provided to add vertical detail and commercial character to the buildings.
  • Rooftop and Utility: Rooftop props and high floor elements allow for the customization of the upper reaches of buildings, ensuring that the environment looks detailed even from high-angle perspectives.

By using these individual prefabs, a developer can differentiate similar building models by applying different combinations of billboards and rooftop utilities, effectively expanding the visual variety of the 73 base structures.

Environmental Lighting and Visual Presets

To demonstrate the implementation of these assets, the package includes two demo scenes. These scenes are configured for different lighting conditions: one for a daytime setting and one for a nighttime setting. These presets show how the models interact with different light sources and skybox configurations. The developer has also included two specific skyboxes to match these scenarios, providing a starting point for global illumination and atmospheric effects. While the models are ready for placement, the package does not include pre-baked lightmap data, meaning developers will need to generate their own lighting solutions within Unity to suit their specific project requirements.

Natural Elements and Foliage

To break up the rigid lines of the urban architecture, the package includes 16 vegetation models. These assets allow for the integration of green spaces within the city grid. The selection covers common urban foliage, including bushes, standard trees, and small trees. For environments requiring a specific regional look, palm trees are also included. These organic assets provide the necessary contrast to the brick, concrete, and metal surfaces found throughout the rest of the package.

Asset Optimization and Technical Workflow

The developer has structured the assets to facilitate a streamlined workflow through the use of texture atlasing. Most textures in the package are 2k in size and atlased to reduce draw calls, which is a standard practice for maintaining performance in complex urban environments. However, for higher fidelity on the largest surfaces, the two road textures are provided at 4k resolution. This ensures that the ground plane, which often occupies a large portion of the screen, retains its detail. With a total asset count of 706—including 284 ready-to-use models and their corresponding prefabs—the package is organized for direct placement into a Unity 2018.4.2 or newer project environment. The 842 MB file size reflects the inclusion of these high-resolution textures and the volume of unique geometry provided for city construction.
