Steam Trains and Stations (Low Poly)

Building Stylized 19th-Century Railway Networks

The Steam Trains and Stations (Low Poly) collection provides a comprehensive library for developers looking to construct period-appropriate railway environments. The set includes 79 total models, focusing on the mechanical and architectural aesthetics of the 19th century. By utilizing the 19th-century style steam trains and railway stations, creators can establish a consistent visual theme across an entire transit system. The developer has included two distinct scenes within the package: an example scene demonstrating how the models interact in a functional layout, and a showcase scene that displays every individual asset for quick reference.

Locomotives and Rolling Stock Variety

The centerpiece of the collection is the selection of steam engines, which vary significantly in complexity and scale. Developers can choose from three primary train types: an Old Steam Train (32,145 polygons), a standard Steam Train (59,754 polygons), and a Large Steam Train (86,307 polygons). Each of these models is provided in two color sets, allowing for visual variety without the need for manual texture adjustments. Smaller steam locomotives are also included, such as the Average Steam Locomotive (11,261 polygons) and a version equipped with a coal car (16,501 polygons).

To populate these engines, the asset pack provides various railroad cars suited for different gameplay or narrative purposes. These include:

  • Passenger Car: A 12,444-polygon model for civilian transit.
  • Buffet Car: A specialized car with 13,680 polygons.
  • Freight Car: Designed for cargo transport, using 9,397 polygons.
  • Old Coal Car: A 8,175-polygon car often paired with the older locomotives.

Modular Track and Signaling Infrastructure

Constructing a functional railway layout is supported by a modular road system. The tracks are broken down into several parts to allow for complex configurations beyond simple straight lines. The Railway Road Straight Part is efficient at 232 polygons, while more complex junctions like the Fork Part reach 1,991 polygons. Developers can also utilize specific directional components, such as the Fork to Left or Fork to Right parts (1,277 polygons each), and various turn pieces. Turns are available in both standard and 45-degree increments for both left and right directions, with the 45-degree turns utilizing 906 polygons.

To manage traffic on these lines, the set includes several railway traffic signs. Two types of traffic lights are available (ranging from 142 to 420 polygons) along with a railway traffic bell (292 polygons). These assets are provided in two color sets to match different environmental conditions or regional styles within a game world.

Station Architecture and Detailed Elements

The collection extends beyond the tracks to include the structures where passengers and cargo are processed. The primary Railway Station model is a 5,669-polygon structure available in four different color sets. To expand the station area, creators can use the Railway Platform with Canopy (1,458 polygons) or the standard Railway Platform (230 polygons), both of which also come in four color variations to ensure they match the main station building.

Fine detail is addressed through a variety of train elements and hardware components. These smaller assets allow for customization of the engines and the tracks. The locomotive pilot—the front-mounted frame designed to clear obstacles—comes in two types, each at 208 polygons. Lighting is particularly well-represented with several styles of train lights, including:

  • Square Train Light (663 polygons)
  • Round Train Light Type 1 and Type 2 (approximately 383 polygons each)
  • Four-Sided Train Light (663 polygons)

Also, the pack includes locomotive side bells (292 polygons) and standard locomotive bells (299 polygons), along with essential hardware like the train hook.

Visual Effects and Optimization

Beyond the static geometry, the developer has included animated lights and particle systems to help bring the steam engines to life. These effects are integrated into the collection to simulate the active nature of 19th-century machinery. The models are optimized specifically for low poly workflows, ensuring that even the larger 86,000-polygon steam trains remain performant within stylized environments. The use of multiple color sets across the stations, platforms, and locomotives provides a broad palette for level designers to create distinct locations using the same base assets.
