Resource overview

It is one thing to block out a western scene with a few generic walk cycles and idle poses. It is another to cut to a close-up of a bartender wiping a glass while a cowboy argues behind him, then to have that cowboy unholster and fire in the same sitting pose. Mocap - Western Animation Library is a 90-clip motion capture set for Unreal Engine 5 that attempts to cover those specific moments, with body and finger data included across the whole pack.

Built for the Sequence, Not the State Machine

The first thing to know is the pack was recorded and polished for cinematics, not for state machines. That distinction matters because the animations are built to play as complete, readable takes rather than transitions stitched together at runtime. Even though many clips have loop and root motion, the intended delivery is a sequence where you drop a clip onto a character and let it perform. The UE5 skeleton support means each animation is ready to attach to an Unreal character rig without rebuilding the asset from scratch.

Because the collection is not constrained by the usual locomotion needs of a gameplay state machine, it can afford to commit fully to one action per clip. A man activates a detonator to explode dynamite. Another man takes off his hat. A third puts it back on. These are narrative gestures, not generic gameplay actions.

What the Saloon Covers: Drinks, Talk, and Piano

A round of drinks alone accounts for many of the clips. There are two bartender cleaning actions, one for the bar and one for a glass with a cloth. The set includes serving alcohol, ordering a drink, sitting drinks, and drinking while talking at the counter. Those actions are split into four DrinkTalk variations: two for a seated character drinking from a bottle while laughing and talking, and two for a character drinking and talking at the bar counter. There are also idles tied to the setting: a woman leaning on the piano, a man leaning on the bar counter, and a man standing with a glass in his hand.

Conversation gets its own space. A sitting man carries one of two talking variations, and a third belongs to a bartender talking with customers. The pack also includes a woman sitting at the bar listening to music, and a woman fanning herself—the kind of small business that makes a crowded saloon feel alive. A man sits astride a chair, another sits with a girl on top, and a separate clip puts a woman on a man's lap. For every social interaction, there is a matching two-shot or close-up option.

Gunplay and Its Aftermath

The Western library does not short-change the violence. Two cowboy duel clips cover the classic standoff. Shooting actions are broken into five variations: a single shotgun blast, a slow unholster and shot, a two-pistol draw and burst, a multi-shot gun, and a fifth clip that just handles the unholster and fire. A separate warning-shot clip fires into the air, useful for crowd control scenes.

Death and injury follow logically. One clip has a man shot in the chest, another shot in the head, and a third shot in the back while running. The pack includes a man shot while walking, a man who falls to the ground and dies after being shot, and three dead-body poses: face down, face up, and hanged. A non-lethal fight pair shows an argument escalating into one man hitting the other, and the second shows the same argument from the beaten man's perspective. The card table gets its own scene too: a sitting man playing cards gets up and shoots, another playing card player gets up to shoot but is shot first, and a third simply plays cards and is shot in place.

Frontier Work, Captivity, and Panic

Beyond the saloon, the set includes frontier work that helps establish the time and place. A gold digger searches the river, a man drives a horse cart, another brakes the cart to a halt, and one ties a horse to a post. A character walks while pulling his horse by the reins. Two lasso throws are here, one on foot and one mounted. There is also a man giving a money bag, another placing money into a bag, and a sheriff removing papers from a desk. For quieter, spiritual beats, a man prays kneeling and crosses himself, while another preaches to an unseen crowd.

The pack also covers situations that put a character at the mercy of the scene. A tied-up man sits on a horse, another walks with his hands tied while being pulled on a rope, and one runs because he is chased. A thief runs with two bags in hand. A man runs scared as shots ring out, and a woman crouches in fear from the same gunfire. A scared man drops to his knees, and another raises his hands in surrender. Prisoners cling to cell bars or lie in a cell bed, giving any jail set a bit of life before the hero storms through the doors.

Finger Detail and Root Motion in UE5

Every clip in the pack is marked as body plus fingers. That means hand detail is not baked as a simple fist or static grip; the fingers move in a way that reads on close-ups. This is especially important for western scenes because so much of the drama sits in the hands: the turn of a glass, the tip of a hat, the index finger resting on a trigger. The pack includes specific hat actions—take off hat and put on hat—plus a hand over the holster idle.

On the technical side, the pack is built for UE5 skeletons and includes both looped clips and RootMotion/InPlace variants. The looped clips are useful for a character standing at a bar or sitting in a chair while the camera moves around them. Root motion lets the character cover ground in the clip, while in-place versions let you keep the character rooted and animate the skeleton alone. Having both options in a single set is practical for planning a shot in Unreal's cinematic pipeline. The pack is tagged for MetaHuman and Character use, which aligns with its skeletal setup.

The Mocap - Western Animation Library is not a small set of generic cycles; it is a collection of 90 defined actions that map to a specific genre. For anyone composing a cinematic western in Unreal Engine 5, the value is in having the same moment covered in multiple angles: a man can sit, play cards, get shot, fall, and lie dead on the floor without mixing assets from different packs. That kind of production cohesion is what makes a mocap library useful beyond its checkbox of features.
