Overview of the Scanned Environment Library

Forest Environment – Dynamic Nature is a comprehensive library designed for creators building natural environments within the Unity engine. Recognized for its artistic quality, the package centers on a massive collection of 100% photo-scanned assets that depict forest and meadow settings. The developer has focused on a workflow that prioritizes optimization, providing atlased textures and multiple Levels of Detail (LODs) for the included assets to ensure they remain performant across various project scales.

The library is not limited to raw meshes; it includes a group of custom shaders designed to simplify the environment creation workflow. These shaders are shared across the developer’s asset ecosystem, ensuring visual consistency when mixing different packs. For those looking to replicate the aesthetics seen in promotional materials, all demo files and a full demo scene are included within the package.

Technical Pipeline and Unity Version Support

Compatibility is a core focus of this package, with support extending from legacy versions to the most recent releases of the Unity engine. The asset pack is compatible with Unity 2020.3 through the Unity 6 series, including specific support for Unity 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, and 6.4. This broad range ensures that projects in various stages of development can integrate these assets without immediate version conflicts.

The package supports the High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP), the Universal Render Pipeline (URP), and the Built-in Render Pipeline. To facilitate this, the developer includes a dedicated support pack inside the asset’s “HD and URP support” folder. Importing this sub-package replaces shaders, prefabs, and meshes with versions specifically configured for the target render pipeline, providing an out-of-the-box solution for Scriptable Render Pipeline (SRP) users. Additionally, the assets support the SRP Batcher and DOTS instancing, which are critical for maintaining high performance in scenes with dense vegetation.

Vegetation and Foliage Assets

The botanical component of the library includes a diverse range of flora suited for forest undergrowth and meadow clearings. The collection features 10 different types of bushes, each equipped with LODs to manage rendering costs. For ground-level detail, the developer has provided 29 grass and plant objects, which are available as standard prefabs and as specific versions optimized for the Unity terrain system.

Smaller environmental details are also represented, including 16 distinct mushroom models with LODs. These assets allow for the creation of intricate micro-environments on the forest floor. All vegetation assets are derived from 100% scanned real-world counterparts, capturing the organic irregularities found in nature.

Geological and Environmental Debris

The package includes a significant number of geological assets to ground the forest scenes. There are 14 unique rock models, which are distributed across 28 different prefabs. These variations include standard rock surfaces and versions where the top of the mesh is covered by leaves or other context-sensitive textures, allowing them to blend naturally into the forest floor. Like the vegetation, these rocks include LODs for performance management.

Beyond rocks, the library contains 37 environmental objects including branches, stumps, trunks, slopes, logs, and detail stones. These are organized into 92 prefabs. To provide environmental context, these objects come in various states: uncovered, covered by leaves, covered by moss, or covered by sand. This variety allows for the depiction of different forest conditions, from damp, mossy groves to drier, leaf-strewn paths.

Surface Textures and Construction Elements

Surface detail is handled through a massive collection of 64 ground textures organized into 14 distinct sets. Each set is comprehensive, containing albedo/smoothness maps, ambient occlusion (AO), heightmaps, and normal maps, along with combined MT/AO/H/SM maps for optimized material usage. These textures cover a wide range of natural surfaces, such as moss, leaves, plants, soil, wet soil, roots, cliff faces, sand, and various types of stones.

For more structured environments, the pack includes a wooden constructor kit with 42 prefabs and 4 bridge prefabs, all featuring LODs. There are also 3 types of stair steps included for vertical navigation within a scene. To assist with pathing, 20 road textures across four sets are provided. These are specifically designed to work with the R.A.M system, and the pack includes a dedicated road profile to facilitate this integration.

Integration Tools and Biome Support

To assist with the distribution of assets across large terrains, the package includes pre-defined biomes for Vegetation Studio PRO. This allows for the automated placement of the photo-scanned assets based on environmental rules. The pack also includes a non-tessellated trial version of the water system from the R.A.M 2019 asset, providing a basic solution for adding water features to the forest environment. Users should refer to the included README files within the support folders for specific instructions on pipeline-specific setup and shader replacement.
